Mood: frustration
I wrote this post last nite, and apparently it never got posted. So I have to try to remember what we saw several days ago. I'm glad I'm taking photos cause the days are becoming a blur.
This day was the guided tour of London. We had the most delightful tour guide named Trudy. Very British and she had us laughing from the moment she opened her mouth till she said goodbye in the afternoon.
Our first site was the Tower of London, site of King Henry VIII,s imprisonments and executions of many souls. This included Anne Boleyn and Sir Thomas More. We stood in the site of the beheadings and visited several haunted towers, including "Bloody Tower" where prisoners waited and incurred horrible treatments of torture. Apparently the dogs on the premise refuse to enter these rooms. We saw the huge ravens that live there. Legend says that if they ever leave the towers, they will crash down.
We also got to view the Queen's Crown Jewels which she uses on special occasions. Bling, bling, bling!
We then hopped on the bus again and saw such places as Trafalgar Square, site of the Lord Nelson monument, the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, Parliament, and Tower Bridge.
We saw where the rich and famous lived and shop, as well as Covent Gardens, site of the filming of My Fair Lady. This place reminds me of NYC's SoHo area.
Our evening plans included eating at an English pub, enjoying a choral service, called Evensong at the Abbey, and driving thru Picadelly Circus-London's Time Square.
It was a very long day.
BRITISH OBSERVATIONS
1. Subway is the Underground and called the Tube.
2. Chips are french fries and Crisps are potato chips.
3. The red phone booths (think Harry Potter movies) are everywhere, but will be coming down soon.
4. Bathrooms are extremely clean and built with better privacy than in the USA. Sometimes we had to pay. 80 to use.
5) Happy Hour is a big deal. The Brits enjoy socializing and drinking beers at numerous pubs around the city. They congregate outside the entrance in huge crowds spilling onto the streets.
6. Starbucks is in Europe.Need I say more.
7. There are no skyscrapers.
8. The buildings are very regal with a lot of old world charm.
9. Traffic, yes; however little honking and much more polite than in USA.
10. Glorious weather. We had unusually warm weather, but most of the time it is like a nice Spring day.
